As an advertising photographer, you’re still selling a product or service, but you’re using your pictures to tell a story that gives that product or service greater appeal.

Advertising photography is a branch of commercial photography that focuses on creating images for advertising and marketing purposes. An advertising photographer is hired to capture a specific image for use as an advertisement. This type of photography is used to market products, services or ideas directly to potential customers. Advertising photographers are not limited to shooting print ads or commercials; their images may appear anywhere from billboards to websites. Working as an advertising photographer allows you to combine your passion for photography with your love of marketing and sales. While the competition for this type of work can be stiff in larger cities, many smaller cities need these types of services on a more limited scale. Advertising photography is a profitable side business for many professional photographers, but it involves a lot more than just snapping pictures and sending them off with the invoice. Read on to learn more about what it takes to become an advertising photographer and how you can get started in this rewarding career path.

What does an advertising photographer do?

Advertising photographers are hired to create an image that will entice the viewer to purchase the product or service being advertised. Their goal is to make the product look appealing while also appealing to your emotions. To do this, they often use lighting techniques and props that can be changed depending on the product being advertised. A good advertising photographer will be able to take a few minutes to assess the product and come up with several different ways to photograph it. When photographing a product that is being held by a model, the photographer must be careful to show the product in the best possible light. They may use a variety of special lighting techniques to make the product appear as if it’s being used in real life.

Skills required to be an advertising photographer

The skills required to become an advertising photographer vary depending on the type of photography you choose to specialize in, but most advertising photographers will need to have extensive knowledge of marketing and advertising concepts. This includes an understanding of sales strategies, target audience, competition and pricing. Photographers who specialize in product or commercial advertising should also have a strong background in visual merchandising and product design. Visual merchandising is the art of arranging and displaying products in a way that draws attention and creates desire. Product designers are responsible for creating mock-ups of products and packaging, including design concepts and materials. A creative and artistic eye can help, but it is not necessary. Photographers who specialize in advertising within the service industry may not need as much creative design experience. However, they should still have excellent communication skills and a detailed understanding of marketing strategies.

How to become an advertising photographer

There are a few steps you can take to become an advertising photographer. The first step is to decide which type of photography you would like to focus on. Product/commercial photography is focused on the visual merchandising of items like clothing, toys, and food products. It deals with the overall look of the product and how it is displayed. Product/commercial photographers are responsible for creating attractive, consistent images of products for advertisements. Concept/commercial photography is focused on the visual representation of the concept or message of the advertisement. It is used to create an image that conveys the product’s purpose or use, as well as its benefits. Concept/commercial photographers are responsible for creating visually interesting images of advertisements and marketing materials. Visual Journalism photography is focused on the social betterment of a community through advertising. Visual Journalism photographers create images that convey an important message and educate the public about social issues. They are responsible for finding a social need and creating an advertisement that appeals to the public to generate funds for the cause. Conceptual photography is focused on the visual representation of an idea through a single image. It can be used in advertisements but is often used to create iconic images that stand the test of time. Conceptual photographers are responsible for creating a single image that conveys an idea and has a lasting impact.

How to best prepare your facility for the next video production or photography shoot.

Do you want your customers to know what you are all about? A professionally produced video is a great way to let them know. It offers you a chance to show your operation in its best light. So make the most of it. If you are going to lay it out there for the world to see, make sure you get it right. Here are a few ideas how to prepare your facility for video production.

Before a video crew shows up, a basic first step is to clean your plant… or your office area. Clean up any clutter, and remove papers from desks. For most wide shots, less is more… so be ready to move things to an out of the way area for the shoot day.

For outside areas, try to have the landscaping look as good as possible. Again, remove any trash or clutter.

Take test pictures of your selected areas, and then examine them. Seeing things though the lens of camera is a little different than the naked eye. How is the lighting in your facility? How clean or cluttered does it look? Pass these shots along to your production crew. Include exterior photos too, taking note of when the photo was taken, and the direction in which the sun moves.

For interviews or testimonials, consider the use of a makeup artist to present your team at its best.

Take notes about the electricity available in the areas you will be recording. Make sure all available circuits are working. The less time the crew spends searching for electricity, the more they can spend on capturing video.

Consider buying shirts to make associates look like a team. Not only does it look better on camera, but your employees might appreciate the gift.

Schedule taping to make best use of manpower. We can help you work up a schedule to make sure you have the right people available for each scene.

What’s the Difference Between a Headshot and a Portrait?

The main difference between a headshot and a portrait is how the images will be used. Traditionally headshots are taken for official business use, while a portrait is more of a descriptive image used to tell a story about the subject.

Portrait

A portrait is a much broader term — essentially any image where the subject is aware she’s being photographed (even if she’s not looking at the camera). Portrait photography, or portraiture, is a type of photography aimed toward capturing the personality of a person or group of people by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. In professional portraits you can see wider variety of moods. Portraits are often more dramatic, subjects can be looking away from the camera or engaging in some kind of activity.

Headshot

A headshot is generally a close-up style shot from the chest up with good lighting on your face, and no strong dramatic shadows. Three-quarter shots are good for print. Its uses are for branding, marketing and for identifying an individual in the marketplace. Headshots may be in studio or on-location. Professional business headshots will normally have a relaxed and friendly feel to them. The subject will often smile. The reason for that is because subject is communicating a message to the observer. Examples of that message could be trustworthiness, friendliness and approachability.

For multiples and groups of headshots, we can bring our studio strobes and backdrops to your place of business. This way we can be on your employee’s schedule instead of the other way around. It is all done at your location usually in a conference room or like space.

Commercial advertising and public relations photographers.

The St Louis business community is very competitive so branding differentiation is important to corporate identity. We collaborate with businesses and designers to create signature business content to meet your branding goals. For instance, a medical device company or design firm may want a more stylized look than a traditional corporate headshot and a law firm or financial institution might want more conservative portraits.

If you are looking for corporate portraiture, we create clean, well-lit studio and environmental portraits for your company’s media and web sites; in office, studio and outdoor settings. Corporate head shots should distinguish the corporate leadership, so their portraits don’t look like your competitor’s portraits. There is a range of options that we can draw from to distinguish your leadership. We can also shoot groups at your location.

We also off a range of digital retouching and post production solutions, including swapping out backgrounds for people at scale, retouching ad compositing work. Light retouching is included on all individual portraiture.

Corporate photography rates are on a project-by-project basis, but we are competitive with St Louis photographers of equal merit. If you would like to see more examples of corporate lifestyle or portrait photography, we will put up a web gallery with more images for consideration.

An excellent companion to product photography, lifestyle or ‘action’ shots enhance your listings by showing your products in use. We also off a range of digital retouching and post production solutions, including swapping out backgrounds for people at scale, retouching ad compositing work. Light retouching is included on all individual portraiture.

Lifestyle images for Amazon listings, ad campaigns, or eCommerce websites highlight your goods in an eye-catching, creative manner and builds brand awareness.

Seeing a demonstration of how your product fits or functions raises consumer confidence and can increase your website or Amazon sales conversions.
